CHARLOTTE, NC — Congressman Mel Watt (12th District of North Carolina) today announced that he has nominated five 12th District students to United States Service Academies for the class entering in July 2008:

  • Hugh Palmer, who lives in Charlotte and attends Charlotte Country Day School, nominated to the United States Military Academy at West Point;
  • Harvey Manley, who lives in Winston-Salem and attends Ronald Reagan High School, nominated to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis;
  • Preston Graham, who lives in Greensboro and attends Ragsdale High School, nominated to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York;
  • Joel Short, who lives in Winston-Salem and attends the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, nominated to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs; and
  • Michael Jones, who lives in High Point and attends the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics High School, nominated to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis.

The United States Service Academies are among the top academic institutions in the country.  They provide young men and women four years of academic, military and physical education to prepare them for leadership as officers in the military.

Congressman Watt appointed an Academy Selection Committee of community leaders from throughout the 12th District to screen and interview each applicant before naming his final nominees.  The nominees were selected based on a number of factors, including school record, class rank, SAT/ACT scores, recommendations, leadership potential and extracurricular activities.

Congressman Watt said: “I am pleased to nominate Hugh Palmer, Harvey Manley, Preston Graham, Joel Short and Michael Jones to their respective United States Military Academies.  Their accomplishments made them stand-outs to the Selection Committee and I am confident they will perform well and serve our nation honorably.”
